PERFIDITAS A Carina Mitela Roma Nova thriller Roma Nova Thriller Series eBook Alison Morton

Excellent alternative history with an intriguing take on (reimagining of) gender roles. These books are so good that I bought them one after another over a weekend and read them back to back.
There are many novels that take as their starting point the assumption that a major historical event turned out differently: The South won the US Civil War, Hitler conquered Europe and kept it, the Spanish bested Drake or Napoleon won at Waterloo. Alison Morton’s four Nova Roma books take a different path. Instead of a different outcome, Ms. Morton imagines what happened if a culture survived.
The idea: A small corner of the Roman Empire survived, keeping some of the culture and religion of Rome – and Latin! – alive into the twentieth century, while the country itself – Nova Roma – had to change to accommodate technological changes. Like Switzerland, Nova Roma has never been conquered. Morton takes practices that were alive during Roman times, such as Senators having clients, and imagines how those practices morphed in almost 2,000 years.
There is a further twist, a twist that makes the books so imaginative. Unlike Switzerland, a patriarchal society, Nova Roma is a matriarchy, albeit a modern one.
So what is excellent about the books?
1. Use of history. Ms. Morton has thought out how today would be different if Nova Roma existed for the past 2000 years. BUT, this history is dropped into the plot in frozen blocks; instead, only when relevant is it mentioned.
2. Use of history. As far as I can determine or remember from my history and years of Latin, the little details of society then are accurate. This makes it so easy to accept Ms. Morton’s recreation of them in modern form – no “willing suspension of disbelief” is required.
3. Plot. Well thought through. Each book has a natural conclusion (no cliffhangers), while creating the beginnings of events that will form the plots for the next books.
4. Characters. I am a fan of strong women – women with “agency” – the ability to make things happen rather than respond to events. It is also the ability to learn from mistakes.
5. Complicated personal relationship(s). There is a romance here, in addition to mystery and suspense. The romance is far from linear.
What didn’t I like? I think that the female lead, Carina Mitela, should have made a different romantic choice. However, I’m male, and I tend to be harder on male characters than I gather female readers are.
My standard disclaimer: I purchase the books, I don’t know the author and I wasn’t asked to review them.

PERFIDITAS A Carina Mitela Roma Nova thriller Roma Nova Thriller Series eBook Alison Morton Reviews

Just OK for me.
Gritty thriller set where Switzerland is Roma Nova. A true survival of Pagan Rome in Christian Europe with tension ratched up as the female supremacy is challenged by Roma fundamentalist Patrialists.
A book about a tough woman cop set in an invented country called Roma Nova, ruled by women. Quite an interesting premise, and a couple of chapters into the book, there is no doubt but that Perfiditas definitely delivers. Carina Mitela is an intelligent and capable woman who runs her own team within the Praetorian Guards. As a complication, her commanding officer is also her husband, and as a further complication her husband used to be the present Empress' partner. His kids - or rather his daughters - are set up to be the next Empress - assuming someone doesn't kill them first.
In an interesting twist re genus structures, Perfiditas is about an all-male group attempting to wrest control out of female hands and reinstate patriarchy. In a race against time, Carina must use her considerable resources to save her country, her family and her man from these traitors, but it comes at a cost.
Carina is a well-rounded character it is easy to relate to. She thinks on her feet when she has to, she has a clear sense of duty, no matter the cost, and she is constantly caught in the sticky web of mixing work with private life - it is tough to have your husband as your boss. This is also where one of my reservation lies while Carina is an excellent soldier - as is her husband - they - especially her husband - seem to fail each other all the time privately. The old adage of keeping your personal life out of your professional life certainly rings true for this couple.
Ms Morton constructs a complex plot. It's a bit like peeling an onion, and Ms Morton does an excellent job of keeping the curve balls flying throughout most of the book. I did, however, feel the ending was a tad too abrupt - conclusive but somewhat unsatisfactory.
I very much enjoyed stepping into the world of Roma Nova,a meticulously constructed fantasy that is built upon Ms Morton's extensive knowledge of all things Roman. I like the way she's introduced "modern" Roman artifacts (I just love the studded sandals the Praetorian Guard wears, the el-pads...), how elegantly she includes details of Roma Nova life, including legal systems, funerary practices etc. It gives the novel a rich texture, and I for one end up quite convinced that somewhere Roma Nova does exist.

I look forward to the next book in the series, and while I expect it to be fast-paced and exciting, I also hope that Carina will achieve some sort of stability in her personal life. That woman definitely deserves to!
Love this story, the adventure, the suspense, the excitement. Family Mitela has a great champion.....The female of the species is always stronger....I will continue to read this series of stories....Congrats Alison Morton on creating memorable characters that make me want to read more.
My verdict ****4.5 stars****
Perfiditas is another winner for Alison Morton in this worthy sequel to Inceptio. The novel may be 2nd in the Roma Nova series, but it works as a stand-alone, too. It has everything I love in story it is fast-paced, spine tingling, nerve-wracking, and has vivid characters, including the kick-ass Carina. Though the country Roma Nova is all in the author’s mind in this alternate historical, it feels very real. Morton’s knowledge of Roman history and culture shines in the little details. Morton keeps you guessing throughout, and just when you think all is well, she tosses in twists and turns that build to a satisfying conclusion.

Disclaimer I met Ms. Morton at the 2015 Historical Novel Society Conference. She gave me a signed copy of Perfiditas in exchange for an honest review.
