I recently had to place my mother in a rehab/nursing home facility.
A friend of mine shared with me, Almost Like Home, and I am grateful that she did.
The book has helped me in several ways. One of my major concerns was how to gauge my mother’s progress in physical therapy, and how the facility would determine when she had reached the limits of her ability. Author Joanna Leefer’s recommendation with regard to the new advocacy information, and, the “voice of experience†example on page 102, helped me make a case to keep my mother in the facility an extra 10 days.
I also found the section in chapter four, “settling in†extremely helpful. As recommended, I spent extra time with my mother in the beginning of her stay in the facility, trying to make her as comfortable as possible. After a week, she began to refer to “her room,†which indicated to us that she was adjusting well to her surroundings.
Thank you, Joanna, for providing this resource. It has made a positive difference as my family and I go through this challenging time.
