#1 in both Historical Fiction and Historical Romance genres, during February 2014 promotions. Equal parts history and mystery, romance and hero’s journey, this Texas tale has more twists and turns than a country back road. In The Legend of Juan Miguel, Anna K. Sargent revisits Texas in the late 19th century, that famed era when the West began and Texas was in a border conflict with Mexico. But in this story, the hero is Hispanic. Sargent asks us to cast aside what we think we know about identity and the history and mythology we’ve been taught. Ride along with the young Juan Miguel as he uses every guise and all the courage he can muster to win back his fortune, his good name, and his lost love. Deprived unjustly of his birthright by ambitious Anglo ranchers, the son of the wealthiest Tejano in Texas is spurred on by a forbidden passion for the woman who is married to one of those ranchers. Handsome, loyal, brave, and cunning, this caballero reinvents himself over and over and becomes a Hispanic hero for the ages

Another perspective of a man so hated by many. I like reading stories about the people who seemingly are hated by people in government and politics. They are just as human as we are and have made do with the circumstances regardless of the consequences.Makes me understand who Juan was and why he became what he became. Only HE knows himself. It is funny how ONE part of your life causes you to take another path that is so different than what is expected of you. I know that feeling - I've lived it.

The Legend of Juan Miguel The Tale of an Unlikely Texas Hero Anna K Sargent 9781938749063 Books Reviews
I absolutely loved this book. Kept me riveted. Just the right amount of fact and fiction. Loved the action.
I enjoyed reading this book so much. It was hard to put it down. I originally downloaded it because it was free and the setting was in Texas near where we spend our winters. It ended up being the best read l have had all year and I am off to see what else this author has written. Now that I know how enjoyable her writing is I will not hesitate to pay real money for it. I do not often do reviews but this author deserves a few minutes of my time.
Love history and this is an enjoyable fictional book with lots of twists and turns, shows the good and bad of people and how racism can be so horrible. It has a lot of psychological elements, truth, fairness and cheating, quite a page turner.
Juan Miguel's character grew, but not Senora Barone. I was confused by her character. There are things in the book that were completely out of character for the period. Juan Miguel's attitude in quite a few situations was not what would have been expected of a hispanic for that time period. There were some surprises along the way but not necessarily necessary surprises. It felt more as if they were dropped in for effect. It was an ok read. Would I read it again? No.
I gave the highest rating because it was deserving. The story is filled with historical value intermingled with amazing fiction drawing this reader into a loyalty that produced neglect to a household requiring daily attention.
As I attended to my house I felt resentment toward those appointments that I had cherished over many years.
I would recommend this book to those who enjoy a great read. I would however add a small warning to those who take my recommendation to complete all necessary tasks before hand...Gracias Señora Sargent.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS BOOK! I didn't believe this book would hold me captivated as it did, but I'm glad I proved myself wrong. Ms Sargent has a wealth of knowledge and historical background, and she applied it well. The story weaves through your heart, changing your mind about illicit love affair - or should I say, an ill fated love affair. My heart sighs for Juan Miguel. Ahhh, now if he could only come to life in reality!! You won't be sorry if you read this book...you'll be pulling for Juan Miguel just as I did! Sigh....
The descriptions of the places and the landscapes were moving, and familiar. Most of the rest of it, I simply found incredible, as in not believable. The ability to pass himself off to people who had known him as Juan Miguel as someone else? To Ben Barone? Nope, not buying it. I find it easier to believe the mestizos and Mexicans would protect him, given the times and events. The relationship with Marguerite is beyond belief. Her character is poorly developed and at time seems almost psychotic. Nevertheless, something about it made it an enjoyable little read for a lazy day. Maybe just because I also love Texas history.
Another perspective of a man so hated by many. I like reading stories about the people who seemingly are hated by people in government and politics. They are just as human as we are and have made do with the circumstances regardless of the consequences.
Makes me understand who Juan was and why he became what he became. Only HE knows himself. It is funny how ONE part of your life causes you to take another path that is so different than what is expected of you. I know that feeling - I've lived it.
